Finding a Style

Thu Oct 11, 2007, 12:03 PM
I'm having trouble finding a particular "style" to work in that I enjoy and can do well.

In particular painting. So far I've worked mainly in water colours and I'd like to start something with oils but... I'm not sure.

The same applies to drawing, I'm fairly confident in my abilities when it comes to sketching and a like but finding a distinct style of drawing that's my own is difficult.

What's brought this about is the HSC major work that I have to complete next year, and begin next term. It goes to %50 of my art grade and I'd really like to do something I enjoy, but also something that really expresses... well me I guess (however cliched that may sound)

Anyway, those are my thoughts. I figure I'll just keep practicing until something clicks

For my individual project I chose to construct costume renderings for Patrick White’s “The Ham Funeral” inspired by previous student’s unique designs exhibited in onSTAGE 2007 and initiated by research in to 1900-1920 period.

I understand the play as an expressionistic exhibition of the different approaches to life personified by the characters and exemplified by key symbols. It is an abstract exploration of relationships between others and themselves and the characters exist in pairs. It is an examination of the complex and confusing progression of individualization; a darkly humorous play reacting to the confusion of a post-1945 period, but not constrained to specific context. It is this understanding of the work that shaped my designs.

The Landlady’s expressionistic symbolism is the element of “flesh,” a dangerously seductive housewife in an exposing corset and petticoat-like skirt emphasising her sexualisation; a bloodstained apron---approach to life.

The four central character’s costumes are stylized and minimalist, a subtle externalization of the internal amongst characters who exist in the interior.

Conversely, the First and Second Lady are secondary characters dwelling in the exterior, with detailed costuming reflecting their animalistic symbolism. The First Lady is a prostitute like figure adorned with feathers, simultaneously comparing her to a scavenger bird and an arrogant peacock, driven by appearance and material possessions.

Alma Lusty and the Dead Landlord are larger than life figures - almost excessively realistic when set beside the Young man and the Girl. White's great influence on Australian theatre was to show it how to move beyond the realism that had been its most dominant mode

It investigates the confused process of individualising a person

Thank you for the favs. I'm actually flattered.

You're welcome. I've always admired peoplewho work in inks.

I've never really had enough courage of conviction to do it. I'm costantly erasing andre-drawing to the point where my page wears thin.

Your gallery is fantastic.
